This one is all about Elliott. (I am using this blog as an online baby book, scrapbook, journal... for our kids, so you may find this boring and to much information, sorry!)
Well, Elliott was struggling to gain weight and now at 6 weeks old, she is doing much better aka Thriving!
She was born 7 lb 0oz
on 1/7 (4 days old) she was 6lb 9oz
1/14 (11 days old) she was 6lb 10oz (10%)
(At this point her doctor was a little concerned about her weight, i am nursing, so he had suggested that I drink more water, increase my calories, and for me to take a couple of herbal supplements.)
1/19 (16 days old) she was 6lb 12oz (8%)
(at 2 weeks she should of been back up to her birth weight and gaining .5 to 1 oz a day!)
1/26 (3 weeks old) 6lb 14 oz (6%)
On the 26th her doctor labeled her "FAILURE TO THRIVE"!!!!!!!
He defined failure to thrive as a term used to describe a child who seems to be gaining weight more slowly than other children who are the same age and sex. A baby who has failed to thrive may seem slow to develop physical skills, such as rolling over, standing, and walking. Slow growth also can lead to delays in mental and social skills. As many of you know, Avery was physically delayed but we credited it to her horrible acid reflux. (Now I am wondering if it was partly the nursing. H was nursed exclusively for a month (he also gained weight slowly when i was nursing) and then he was supplemented and by 10 weeks old when I was back at work he was on all formula-so we never experienced any major delays or problems with him)
Jeff and I took this very seriously. We did not want her to suffer and experienced all the delays that Avery had to go through! So Elliott's doctor sent me to see a specialist. The 3 of us (Elle's Dr, specialist, and I) decided that my milk may not be the best for her and that I needed to start supplementing.
On 1/28 (almost 4 weeks) she weighed 7 lb 1oz (7%) YAY 1 oz above birth weight!!!!!!
Her doctor said to keep supplementing because she had some catching up to do!
and last week (5.5 weeks old) she weighed 7 lb 14oz (8%)
She gained 13 oz in 2 weeks!!!!! (however she has only gained 14 oz since birth) but we are on the right track. Hopefully that drama is over!! We will go back to the doctor in about 2 weeks for her 2 month check up.
Here are some pictures from her first bath. Not a fan and check out those chicken legs!!!
